The great thing about The Great Gatsby is that the characters and their decisions also reflect life in America today. For example Gatsby was willing to take the blame for the murder of myrtle to make Daisy safe. When Daisy was driving she ran over myrtle but didn't even care ONE bit to stop. She deserves to be punished for her crime but Gatsby was so blinded by thought of a future with Daisy. I'm pretty sure we've all wanted something so bad and tried to do whatever it took to get it.
Looking back the great thing about Gatsby is that I feel like he was the only one in the book who felt a least a bit human besides Nick of course. The people around were really fake and just used him to gain something out of him. But I also feel like he was really lonely being at the top. Since he grew up poor he's been so focused on become rich and win the girl of his dreams without his pride being hurt. When he finally got to his destination he tried using money to keep him alive... it basically controlled his whole life. Even though he was big on money he never used anyone and just kept to himself.
On the other hand Nick seems to me like he hangs out with really messed up rich people to make himself look good. Yes, he was there for Gatsby and tried everything he could to get him out of trouble but when he knew Tom was having an affair he didn't even care to mention it to his cousin Daisy. He says he's honest but only because he doesn't gossip with other people. To me it feels like he enjoys hearing all the gossip and just keeps it to himself. But he also has a sense of respect towards them because they're rich and someone in life. Which was Nicks reason to move away from his hometown and just start somewhere with his life.
Fitzgerald describes Tom and Daisy as careless and that they let other people clean up their mess. Which I fully agree with. For starters in the beginning of the book Daisy and Tom were drinking their night away while paying no attention to their daughter heck they even forgot about her. Talk about being parents of the year. Not giving a damn about their daughter they even got a family dog who guess what... they also don't pay any attention too.
OH and Daisy she really knows how to push people's buttons. The woman can't even think for herself. I'm honestly not surprised Tom had an affair with another woman. Like running over a woman and not stopping or caring at all really shows how careless she is. Everyone else thinks it's Gatsby who ran her over and let people believe that as well. If she would've confessed to murdering Myrtle Gatsby wouldn't be dead. She let a man she had feelings for in the past and was even considering getting back together with him before Tom had to make her remember about all the years they spent together.
In the line of last page of the book there's it goes "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." I feel like it's trying to describe the situation Gatsby is in because throughout his whole life he's been trying to get Daisy back and fix the past. But in a boat there's waves and it pushes you back and you try hard to keep going forward but it's too strong. That goes the same with Gatsby he's trying so hard but it's not enough.
